Pharamacognostical Studies on the Codonopsis Plants-4-On the Botanical Origin of the Chinese Crude Drug"Dangshen(党参)"Derived from the Plants of Sect.Erectae-2-

In order to identify the botanical origins of the Chinese crude drug, "Dangshen (党参)," commercially available in Sichuan (視線), Xinjiang (新彊) and Tibet, the roots of two species of the Sect. Erectae of the Subgen. Codonopsis, two species and one variety of the Subgen. Pseudocodonopsis, and Campanumoea javanica were studied anatomically. The results were as follows: (I) The roots of these five species can be distinguished from each other by the presence or absence of stone cells in the cortex, number of periderms, development of rhexigenic intercellular spaces, ratio of diameter of xylem to that of root, tangential diameter of cork cells, etc. (II) On the basis of the observations of the above characteristics, "Shetou-Dangshen (蛇頭党参)" from Sichuan and part of "Dangshen" from Tibet were shown to be derived from Codonopsis canescens, and "Xinjiang-Dangshen (新彊党参)" or "Dangshen" from Xinjiang from C. clematidea. Further anatomical characteristics of the roots of eighteen Codonopsis species including three varieties were summarized in a table to give the basis for distinguishing these species often encountered in our pharmacognostical studies (Key 1). By using this keytable, it is possible to determine the botanical origins of almost all the drugs of this series, i.e. "Dangshen" of China, and "Mansam" and "Shasam" of Korea.
