Pharmacognostical Studies on the Crude Drugs of Orchidaceae from Taiwan-8-On the "Chheng-chioh-nng"(青石蛋)

"Chheng-chioh-nng" (青石蛋) nas been used in Taiwan as a folk remedy for nephritis. "Chheng-chioh-nng" was assumed to have been derived from the pseudobulbs of Phaius flavus (BL.) LINDL. of Orchidaceae. However, this has not been proved yet. To clarify its botanical origin, the comparative anatomy of the pseudobulbs and roots of Phaius plants growing generally in Tai- wan, Phaius flavus, P. mishmensis (LINDL.) Reichb. f., P. tankervilleae (BANKS) BL., P. actinomorphus (FUK.) T. P. LIN, was examined. Furthermore, one of the related species, P. actinomorphus (FUK.) T. P. LIN, was named as Calanthe actinomorpha by Fukuyama in 1935, and its genus was reassigned to Phaius by Lin in 1975 based on the taxonomic characteristics of the flower. In this paper, we also studied the anatomy of the rhizomes and roots of the related plants, Phaius actinomorphus, along with several Calanthe species included for taxonomic reference. The results show that "Chheng-chioh-nng", as sold on the Taiwan market, is derived from the pseudobulbs and roots of Phaius flavus, and indicate that the internal characteristics of C. actino- morpha are more similar to those of Phaius plants than those of Calanthe species. The anatomical characteristics of "Chheng-chioh-nng" and the pseudobulbs and roots of related Phaius plants and Calanthe species are shown in TABLE I and II.
