Development of Natural Crude Drug Resources from Taiwan (VI) : In vitro Studies of the Inhibitory Effect on 12 Microorganisms

A preliminary antibacterial screening test of local crude drugs was carried out using 12 bacterial strains. Of 83 aqueous extracts tested, 25 are shown to have significant antibacterial activity with the minimal inhibitory concentration equal to or lower than 7.81 mg/ml. Of these effective crude drug extracts, Morus australis, Phellodendron wilsonii, Aloe chinensis, Viola stenocentra and Thuja orienialis are very effective in inhibiting the growth of gram-positive bacteria (MIC≤ 3.91 mg/ml). On the other hand, Elephanlopus scaber, Orthosiphon aristatus, Areca catechu, Clerodendron cyrtophyllum, Ludwigia octovalis, Mentha arvensis, Perilla frutescens, Artemisia vulgaris var. indica, Mosla chinensis and Ephedra sinica markedly inhibit the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (MIC≤3.91 mg/ml).
