Pharmacognostical Studies on "Beichi(貝歯)"-4-Investigation on the Olive Shells Used as "Zibeichi(紫貝歯)"

Olive shells are described in a modern Chinese literature as a substitute for "Shijueming (石決明)." Three kinds of olive shells were found among commercial "Zibeichi (紫貝歯)" samples in the Hong Kong market. The outer structure, colour and patterns, the structure of cross sections and amino acid compositions of those shells were examined and they were identified as the shells of: (1) Oliva (Carmione) musterina LAMARCK, (2) 0. (Neocylindrus) annulata (GMELIN) or (3) 0. (Oliva) oliva (L.). Shells of Oliva musterina Lamarck (1) contains a large amount of acidic amino acids, e.g. aspartic and glutamic acids, though the total amino acid content in the shells was extremely small (0.0058%).
