"Han-lian-cao" (旱蓮草) is a folk medicine in Taiwan, used as hepatitis, tight chest, bronchitis, asthma, lung trouble, to treat all kinds of bleeding and to keep the hair black or encourage its growth etc. It is found that there are many kinds of "Han-lian-cao" on the Taiwan market. To clarify the botanical origins of the commercial drug, histological studies were made. From the characteristics of the external and internal structures of the materials, it is found that "Han-lian-cao" is derived from the entire plant or aerial part of the following species: (1) Eclipta prostrata L., (2) Alternanthera sessilis R. BROWN, (3) Wedelia chinemis (OSBECK) MERR., (4) Hypericum ascyron L. The study on Wedelia and Hypericum plants will be reported in the next paper. The morphological characteristics of "Han-lian-cao", Eclipta prostrata L. and Alternanthera plants from Taiwan are shown in TABLE I.
