A Comparative Study on the Inhibitory Effects of Flavonoids and Alkaloids on Reverse Transcriptases of Different Retroviruses

Three flavonoids and twelve benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids were studied for their effects on reverse transcriptases (RTs) of different retroviruses, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), Moloney murine leukemia virus (MuLV) and avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV), in the presence of (rA)_n-p(dT)_<12-18> as a template-primer. The most potent inhibitors, quercetagetin (3), fagaronine (8) and nitidine (12), inhibited all three RTs to a similar extent. Of the RTs tested, MuLV-RT activity was more effectively inhibited by most of the samples tested. The inhibitory effects on AMV-RT and on HIV-RT were generally of the same extent.
