Comparative anatomical studies on the leaves of Bambusaceous plants were made to identify the botanical origins of the crude drug "Wa-no-tan-chiku-yo(和淡竹葉)" on the Japanese market and "Juk-yeup (竹葉)" on the Korean market. The crude drug, "Wa-no-tan-chiku-yo" is shown to consist of the leaves of either or both of Phyllostachys bambusoides SIEB. et ZUCC. ("Wa-no-tan-chiku-yo"-A) and P. nigra (LODD.) MURANO var. henonis STAOF ("Wa-no-tan-chiku-yo"-B). The crude drug "Juk-yeup" is shown to consist mainly of the leaves of the genera Sasamorpha and Pseudosasa, and occasionally of the leaves of the genera Phyllostachys and Pleioblastus. The plant leaves from the genus Phyllostachys contained in the "Juk-yeup" samples obtained on the Korean market consist of P. bambusoides ("Juk-yeup"-A) and P. pubescens MAZEL ex HOUZ, de LEH. ("Juk-yeup"-B). Anatomical characteristics of "Wa-no-tan-chiku-yo"-A, "Wa-no-tan-chiku-yo"-B, "Juk-yeup"-A, "Juk-yeup"-B and the leaves of Phyllostachys spp. are presented in TABLE I.
