Isolation of Two Saponins from Anemone flaccida and Their Effects on Reverse Transcriptase

Two triterpene saponins were isolated from the rhizomes of Anemone flaccida FR. SCHMIDT (Ranunculaceae). The structures were determined to be oleanolic acid 3-0-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-xylopyranoside (giganteaside D) and oleanolic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-xylopyranoside, a new saponin named flaccidin B, by chemical and spectroscopic methods including LC-MS analysis. Both saponins showed inhibitory effect on the reverse transcriptase from a RNA tumor virus.
