Application of Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry to the Qualitative Analysis of Saponins (I)

A new type liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system equipped with a FRIT-FAB interface was applied to the qualitative analysis of saponins. A mixture of saponins was subjected to reversed-phase column chromatography and the elution profile was monitored by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB). The peaks were identified on the basis of their retention times and FAB spectra. This means will be useful for the evaluation of crude drugs, though further improvement of the system may be necessary for the universal application.
