Glycyrol, glycyrin, isoglycyrol and glycycoumarin isolated from the methanolic extract of licorice roots (Glycyrrhiza uralensis FISCH. et DC, Leguminosae) had potent antibacterial action against a cariogenic bacterium, Streptococcus mutatis. The former two compounds completely inhibited the bacterial growth at 6.25 μg/ml and the latter two at 12.5 μg/ml, determined by the tube dilution technique. The four coumarins were contained only in the licorice roots from the northeast and southeast regions of China, but not in those from Sinkiang, the Soviet Union and Afghanistan.
