Effects of Caffeic Acid Analogues on the Rate and Amplitude of Beating of Cultured Myocardial Sheets

The effects of five types of caffeic acid analogues on the rate and amplitude of beating of cultured myocardial sheets were examined. Although no marked changes were found with low-molecular- weight compounds such as caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid, lithospermic acid (trimer) and Mg^<2+>-free lithospermic acid B (tetramer) caused the rate and amplitude to increase. In the presence of Mg^<2+>-bound lithospermic acid B, the amplitude increased continuously. The actions of Dan Shen components are discussed on the basis of these findings.
