Pharmacognostical Study on the Chinese"Qiang-huo(羌活)"On the Anatomical Characteristics of the Underground Parts of Notopterygium incisum and N.forbesii

"Qiang-huo (羌活)" is a well-known Chinese crude drug used for treatment of rheumatism and other ailments such as a headache and a cold. According to our field and market investigations, all the commercial Qiang-huo samples produced in China, sold under several different commercial names depending on their external features, were thought to be derived from the underground parts of two Notopterygium species of the family Umbelliferae. At present, there is no anatomical criteria which enable us to decide which one of the two species is their botanical origin. In this paper, in order to establish the criteria in the identification of the origin of Qiang-huo samples, a comparative anatomical study was carried out on the rhizomes and roots of N. incisum and N. forbesii. It was found that there were obvious differences between the two species, especially in the character of epithelial cells of the oil canals. These samples called "Can-qiang (蚕羌)" and "Zhu-jie-qiang (竹節羌)" were shown to be derived from the rhizome of iV. incisum, those called "Da-tou-qiang (大頭羌) ," from the rhizome of iV. forbesii, and those called "Tiao-qiang (条羌)," from the roots of the two.
