In our previous paper, the morphological and histological characters of the official medicinal Da-huang (大黄, Rhubarb) derived from three species of the section Palmata of the genus Rheum were described. In certain markets, the rhizomes and roots of other Rheum spp. known collectively as unofficial Da-huang are also available. To identify the origins of these unofficial Da-huang in Chinese markets today, a comparative anatomical study of the underground parts of Rheum emodi WALL., R. hotaoense C.Y. CHENG et T.C. KAO and R. franzenbachii MUNT., all belonging to the Section Rhapontica, was made. The result shows that all the three species are sold in the markets as Da-huang and that these can be distinguished from each other by examining their morphological characteristics such as star-spots and mucilage cavities, the width of medullary rays, etc. They can also be differentiated from the official Da-huang, according to the number and size of star-spots in the rhizomes and the morphological characters of mucilage cavities, medullary rays, etc. in the roots. It is also confirmed that star-spots are present in the rhizomes of R. emodi and that coil-like vessels are also present in the xylem of the star-spots.
