Pharmacognostical Studies of Berberis Plants (Berberidaceae) from Nepal (1) : Altitudinal, Interspecific, and Partial Variations of Berberine Content in the Bark

Ninety one bark samples from 56 plants of 12 Berberis species collected in Western Nepal were chemically analyzed, and the correlation between their berberine contents and the altitude of habitats, plant ages, diameters of stems, etc., were studied. The bark of plants growing in lower altitudes and having larger stems tended to contain more berberine, probably because of the higher temperature in lower habitats. Although the production of chemical components in the plant body is generally thought to be genetically controlled, the berberine content in the Berberis bark is influenced apparently more strongly by environmental factors than by genetic ones.
