Pharmacognostical Studies on the Polygonatum Plants-2-On the Botanical Origins of the Crude Drug"Whangjeong(黄精)"from Korea

In order to identify the botanical origins of Korean and Japanese "Huangjing (黄精)," locally called "Whangjeong" and "Ohsei" respectively and of "Dae-Whangjeong (大黄精)" and "So-Whangjeong (小黄精)" in Korean market, the rhizomes of eight species and three varieties of the genus Polygonatum were studied anatomically. The results were as follows: (I) The rhizomes of each taxon can be distinguished from each other by the differences of the thickness of cuticles, types, densities and diameters of vascular bundles, shapes of delimitation between xylem and phloern in collateral bundles, densities, shapes and diameters of mucilage cells, etc. (II) "Whangjeong" samples were composed of the rhizomes of P. odoratum var. pluriflorum only, or P. sibiricum only, or a mixture of the two. All "Dae-Whangjeong" samples were of P. sibiricum, and "So-Whangjeong" samples were composed of rhizomes of P. odoratum var. pluriflorum singly or in a mixture with rhizomes of P. sibiricum in various ratios. In the most case, the rhizomes determined as P. odoratum var. pluriflorum might contain those of P. lasianthum var. coreanum. (III) Of the Japanese "Ohsei" samples tested, one was determined to be of P. odoratum var. pluriflorum, and one to be of P. falcatum.
