Analytical Studies on Poria cocos, II : The Relationship between the Triterpene Contents and the Color of the Sclerotium

To study the differences between white hoelen and red hoelen, the relationships between the amounts of four triterpenes i.e. dehydropachymic acid, 3β-hydroxylanosta-7, 9(11), 24-trien-21-oic acid, pachymic acid and trametenolic acid and the color of 30 samples were examined. For the color measurement, three values in the CIE 1976 L^*a^*b^* color system were used. The samples examined included 14 commercial hoelens from China obtained in Osaka, and 16 wild samples collected in Japan and China. The 3β-hydroxylanosta-7, 9(11),24-trien-21-oic acid content was found to be proportional to the L^*, a^* and b^* values, with the coefficients of -0.86, 0.70 and 0.64, respectively. The result indicates that more brownish hoelen contains more 3β-hydroxylanosta-7, 9(11), 24-trien-21-oic acid.
