Medico-Botanical Studies of Ephedra Plants from the Himalayan Region, Part III : Causative factors of variation of alkaloid content in herbal stems

Ephedra gerandiana and E.pachyclada growing in the Himalaya were studied chemically to search for the causative factors of variation of alkaloid contents in the herbal stem. It was clarified that the ephedrine alkaloid content was higher in E.pachyclada than in E.gerardiana, that the alkaloid content was not related to the stock sex, and that the alkaloid content of E.pachyclada was apparently affected by the altitude of the places where the stocks grew. The alkaloid content widely varied in plants growing in the lowland area, whereas it was all low in those growing in the highland area It was clarified that both species growing in the area with a higher soil pH value had a higher alkaloid content. The difference in alkaloid content between the two species was considered to be not only due to the genetic factors but also due to the environmental factors of the growing places, including soil pH. Thus, for medical uses, the Ephedra plants growing in the dry lowland area or in the waste with alkaline soil should be of better value.
