Ephedra gerardiana and E.pachyclada collected in the Nepalese Himalayas were assayed for the tannin and flavonoid contents of their herbal stems. The results showed that the (+)-catechin and ent-epigallocatechin-(4α→8, 2α→O→7)-catechin contents of E.pachyclada were, on average, more than five times those of E.gerardiana, and that the differences in the tannin and flavonoid contents between the two species were probably due to genetic factors and not to environmental factors. It was also found that they were not related either to the presence of cones or to the plant sex, as in the case of alkaloid contents. In the Himalayan region, on the basis of the chemical constituents, such astannin, flavonoids and alkaloids, E.pachyclada was concluded to be superior to E.gerardiana as a botanical source of medicinal Ephedra.
