Da-huang (大黄, Rhubarb), one of the most well-known drugs produced in China, is either official Da-huang or un-official Da-huang, derived from several species of the genus Rheum of the family Polygonaceae. This paper describes pharmacognostical studies of the official Da-huang. The results show that the Da-huangs derived from the rhizomes and roots of Rheum palmatum L., R. tanguticum MAXIM, ex BALF. and R. officinale BAILL., all belonging to section Palmata, can be distinguished from each other by the presence or absence of mucilage cavities or the amount of mucilage cavities and the number of seriate of phloem rays, etc. Characteristic coil shape vessels are discovered in the xylem of the star-spots in all the three species, and we propose to name this type of vessels "coil-like vessels." It is also clarified that Ya-huang (雅黄) produced in northwest Sichuang Province, which has long been considered to be the rhizomes of R. officinale, is actually those of R. palmatum and R. tanguticum.
