Pharmacognostical Studies on the Chinese Crude Drug "Ce bai ye" (III) : On the Botanical Origin of "Ce bai ye" from Taiwan

Authentic "Ce bai ye" used in Chinese Medicine is considered to be twigs with scale-like leaves of Thuja orientalis L. of the Cupressaceae family. Though most of "Ce bai ye" on the market in Taiwan are derived from this plant, there are some "Ce bai ye" mixed with the twigs of other plants. In this paper, to identify the botanical origin of these blended twigs, the twigs of three Taiwanese Cupressaceae plants, i.e. Calocedrus formosana, Chamaecyparis formosensis and Ch. obtusa var. formosana, are anatomically studied. The results showed that the botanical origin of the blended species was Ca. formosana, and that it was normally contained in the ratio of 10-15 %.
