Pharmacognostical Studies on the Genus Stellaria and Its Related Genera XI. : Anatomical Features of Stems in Several Stellaria Species and Its Related Genera

The aim of this study is, first, to examine anatomical features of the stems of several Stellaria taxa and its related genera in the Caryophyllaceae; second, to compare those with the other Caryophyllaceous taxa reported in our earlier studies of this series; and third, to provide further useful criteria for identifying crude drug articles distributed in the market. The taxa examined in the present study are seven Stellaria species, i.e., S. media, S. neglecta, S. diversiflora, S. sessiliflora, S. monosperma var. japonica, S. ruscifolia, S. alsine var. undulata, and several species of related genera, Cucubalus baccifer, Arenaria merckioides, Cerastium caespitosum var. ianthes and Ce. viscosum, and Malachium aquaticum. The micro-morphological as well as histological characters of the stems examined were: (i) types of vessels in the vascular bundles, (ii) features of cuticles, epidermal cells, and distributions of multicellular or unicellular hairs, (iii) specific types of multicellular hairs borne from the stoma-like epidermal cells, and (iv) development of vascular bundle sheath. The overall results of the present as well as earlier observations on the various stem characters of Stellaria and its related genera have shown that these characters are most useful for not only identifying these Caryophyllaceous plants as crude drug articles, but also providing significant diagnostic anatomical characteristics of these taxa. In the crude drug articles, stems of two Stellaria species, S. media and S. neglecta, were found to be commonly comprised.
