Pharmacognostical Studies on the Crude Drugs "Ho-thau-phang" of Insects from Taiwan

"Ho-thau-phang" is one of the insect drugs sold in Taiwan. Today, this drug is mainly used as an antirheumatic and a tonic for the treatment of rheumatic arthritis and dyspepticia. In Taiwan, there are many kinds of wine infusions of Ho-thau-phang. To identify the origins of Ho-thau-phang which are often unknown, pharmacognostical studies of the drugs and the identification of the insects used by comparing them with various Vespa insects commonly found in Taiwan, were made. It was shown that the Ho-thau-phang wine in Taiwan market is prepared from the larvae, chrysalides and adult worker bees of the following wasps. Female and adult drones were seldom contained. (1) Vespa affinis LINNE (2) V. mandarinia nobilis SONAN (3) V. velutina flavitarsus SONAN (4) V. basalis SMITH (5) V. analis nigrans BUYSSON (6) V. tropica LINNAEUS (7) mixture of V. analis nigrans and V. basalis (8) mixture of V. analis nigrans and V. tropica The morphological characteristics of these wasps are shown in Table I and the key to the species of these wasps is also given.
