From Sparganii Rhizoma, a new pyrrole carboxylic acid ester (1) was isolated, together with (9S, 12S, 13S)-trihydroxy-10E-octadecenoic acid. The structure of 1 was shown to be phenetyl pyrrole-2-carboxylate on the basis of the chemical and spectral data. Comparative anatomical studies were also performed on tuberous rhizome of Sparganium stoloniferum and S. glomeratum, and commercial Sparganii Rhizoma to identify the botanical origin of the commercial crude drug samples. The origin of almost all the commercial samples was determined as the rhizomes of S. stoloniferum. on the basis of the morphology of cortical parenchyma cells in aerenchyma, diameters of endodermal rings, tracheids and simple starch grains, and degrees of sclerification of the parenchyma in stelar region.
