"Chioh-hak" (石斛) has been used for the treatment of fever, soothing of the stomach, as an antithirst agent in febrile disease, as a sexual tonic, as an analeptics, etc. It was found that there are many kinds of "Chioh-hak" on the Taiwan market. To clarify the origins of these varieties of "Chioh-hak," histological studies were made on specimens of the drugs, and were then com- pared with the Dendrobium and Ephemerantha plants from Taiwan. From the experimental results, the following conclusions were obtained: 1) "Chioh-hak" is derived from the stems, rhizomes and roots of Ephemerantha comata (BL.) HUNT & SUMMERH. and Dendrobium davatum (REICHB. f.) TANG et WANG. 2) "Bok-hak" (木斛) and "Chhoan-bok-hak" (川木斛) are derived from the stems, rhizomes and roots of D. davatum var. aurantiacum. 3) "Kim-si-chioh-hak" (金絲石斛) and "Kim-chhai-chioh-hak" (金釵石斛) are derived from the stems, rhizomes and roots of D. moniliforme (L.) Sw. 4) "Kim-chioh-hak" (金石斛) is derived from the stems, rhizomes and roots of the following plants: (A) E. comata, (B) D. davatum var. aurantiacum, (C) D. moniliforme, (D) the mixture of A and C, (E) the mixture of B and C. The morphological characteristics of these drugs are shown in TABLE I.
