Fundamental Studies on the Evaluation of Crude Drugs. VIII : Monthly Variations in Anatomical Characteristics and Chemical Components of the Dried Fruit Peels of Citrus unshiu, C. aurantium and C. natsudaidai

For the purpose of evaluating Citri pericarpium which are available in Japan, monthly variations in anatomical characteristics and in contents of essential oils (d-limonene), synephrine and hesperidin (or naringin) in the peel of Citrus unshiu MARCOVITCH as well as that of C. aurantium L. subsp. amara ENGLER or C. natsudaidai HAYATA were analyzed. The three different kinds of dried peels could be distinguished on the basis of the features of oil cavities, the presence or absence of calcium oxalate and hesperidin crystals, and the gas chromatographic patterns of essential oil fraction. Furthermore, in the comparison of chemical components among the three species, the ripe fruit peels were higher in the content of essential oils (or d-limonene) than the unripe fruit peels. The ripe peel of C. unshiu had the lowest content of essential oils, but the unripe peel contained the highest amounts of synephrine and hesperidin.
