Studies on Crude Drugs Effective on Visceral Larva Migrans. VI : Identification of Nematocidal Principles in Tephrosia purpurea PERS.

The Sri Lankan traditional medicine "Pilamul" (root of Tephrosia purpurea PERS.) showed strong nematocidal activity on the larva of Toxocara canis. The following compounds were isolated and identified: lanceolatin B (I), α-toxicarol (II), deguelin (III), tephrosin (IV), O-methylobovatin (V), and dehydrodeguelin (VI) from the whole plant (mainly aerial part), pongamol (VII), rotenone (VIII), rotenolone (X), methylpongamol (XI), and a new flavonoid, [2S]-7-methoxy-8-(3-methoxy-3-methyl-but-1-enyl) flavanone (IX), from the root. Of these, rotenoids showed very strong nematocidal activity, while flavonoids and chalcones were weakly active or inactive. Rotenoids were found to be contained more in the root than in the aerial part.
