Pharmacognostical Studies on the Chinese Crude Drugs Derived from Insects (VII) : On the Original Insects of Qicao (〓〓)

Qicao (〓〓) is one of the insect drugs, used for treatment of the internal bleeding, distortion, amenorrhoe and tetanus in the traditional Chinese medicine. Fen (〓), Fenqi (〓〓) or Qiuqi (〓〓) are also recorded as another names of Qicao in the Chinese herbal literatures. Qiuqi consists of the larvae of family Cerambycidae insects inhabiting the trunk of mulberry tree etc. and is not used as Qicao at present. Qicao is composed of a mixture of the larvae belonging to the several families in Scarabaeoidea. It was proved that Qicao from Hong Kong market comprises the mixture of the larvae of four families, Melolonthidae, Rutelidae, Cetoniidae and Dynastidae. Among their larvae, Protaetia orientalis GORY et PERCHERON, Xylotrupes dichotomus L, Holotrichia morosa WATERHOUSE and a species similar to Holotrichia Kiotonensis BRENSKE were confirmed. Qicao from Nan-jing market was the mixture of the larvae of three families, Melolonthidae, Rutelidae and Cetoniidae.
