Studies on Submerged Culture of Basidiomycetes : (III) The Oxygen Transfer within the Pellets of Lentinus edodes

• It has been examined the oxygen uptake rate of the pellets of Lentinus edodes cultured in a submerged system and discussed about oxgyn transfer in the pellets. It is well known that the resistance of oxygen transfer in a submerged culture system should be classified in some steps, such as gas film, interface, liquid film of gas babbles, liquid path, liquid film of microorganism, clump and reaction resistance. Here the last three steps of resistance are discussed.It has been found that resistance caused by liquid film of the pellets of L. edodes(diameters : 9.64mm and 14.34mm) may be disregaded in an ordinary culture system. The oxgen belance in a pellet has been discussed and the following equation is introduced on the assumption that respiration reaction of mycelial cell occurs in the Michaelis-Menten correlation, (d^γ)/(dλ^2)+2/λ(dγ)/(fλ)=(φ^2γ)/(1+γ) Theoretical values of effectiveness factors of the pellets concerning respiration have been compared with expeirmental values. It has been concluded that the bulk flow effects on the oxygen tranfer rate in the pellets of low density and that the experimental value of effectiveness factor is larger than the theoretical value estimated by assuming the controle of oxygen transfer dy molecular diffusion alone. Therefore, effective diffusivity of oxygen in the pellets of L. edodes presents several as large value as molecular diffusivity of oxygen in water.
