The investigation was made to clarify whether a multistage tower aeration system has some advantages, particularly in respect ot the purification effeciency and the sludge settleability in comparison with a complete mixing system. Laboratory experiments were conducted with three activated sludge systems i.e., complete mixing, two-stage and following conclusions could be drawn by comparing these systems.(1)The efficiency of purification int eh multistage tower aeration system was higher than in the corresponding complete mixing system for any applied organic loadings. (2)In both the multistage and two-stage aeration systems, filamentous bulking never occurred even in the same organic loading range as that it was observed in the complete mixing system, and the sludge with food settleability was preserved. However, above the sludge loading at which protozoa were washed out of the systems, the activated sludge flocs were broken up into small fragments and consequently the values of SVI increased rapidly. (3)Somewhat less activated sludge was produced in the multistage tower aeration system than in the complete mixing one. (4)The multistage tower aeration system appeared to reduce the concentration of suspended bacteria in the effluents. Moreover, we discussed in this paper the reason why the multistage tower aeration system gave rise to the growth of zoogloeal flocs with good settleability and produced effluents of better quality.
