Various microbial cells were screened for high productivity of menaquinone (MK, vitamin K_2). All eucaryotic microorganisms tested contained only coenzyme Q(CoQ). The quinone systems of bacteria and actinomycetes were divided into 3 types : CoQ alone, CoQ and MK, MK alone. Cultural experiments on intracellular MK production were carried out with Flavobacterium meningosepticum IFO 12535. Shikimate, o-succinyl-benzoate, isopentenol, L-tyrosine and p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate increased the intracellular content of MK. The maximal production, 21.3 mg/l and 3.52 mg/g dry cell, was obtained with simultaneous additions of L-tyrosine and isopentenol.
