Distribution of Hydantoin Hydrolyzing Activity in Microorganisms : Microbial Transformation of Hydantoins to Amino Acids(I)

The distribution of hydantoin hydrolyzing activity in microorganisms was investigated and high activity was found in various bacteria belonging to Pseudomonas, Aerobacter, Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium and in actinomycetes. Hydrolysis of DL-5-(2-methylthioethyl)hydantoin was carried out with the microorganisims and the product was identified as N-carbamyl-D-methionine by physicochemical methods. The culture conditions were studies with a strain of Pseudomonas striata and cells containg high activity were obtained when they grew at 30℃ for 12 hr in a medium containgin 20 g meat extract, 6 g glycerol, 1 g hydantoin, 2g KH_2PO_4 1 g MgSO_4・7H_2O, 40 mg CaCl_2,20 mg FeSO_4・7H_2O, 20 mg MnSO_4・4-6H_2O, and 20 mg CuSO_4・5H_2O in 1 l(pH 5.5).
