Anomalous Saturation Characteristics of Output Powers of Ar^+ Ion Lasers and Influence of Pinch Effects

Pulsed Baser oscillation was obtained at a pressure of 15 mtorr with inductive excitation by 10, μsec d-c pulses. When a diaphragm was inserted into the cavity andthe 4880 Å peak laser intensity was plotted as a function of peak current, the laser intensity vs discharge current curve shows two maxima. The second maximum seems to be mainly caused by the pinch effect. It is discussed on the basis of current pulse waveforms, and temperatures and densities of the charged particles.
