A new instrumentation which records automatically the magneto-optical rotatory dispersion as a function of wavelength (MORD) is described. Two cells, filled with a solvent and solution of a sample in the solvent, are symmetrically assembled and are rotated around the axis of symmetry in a magnetic field which is in line with the rotation axis. Linearly polarized light is directed through the upper cell parallel to the magnetic field and then reflected back through the lower cell. Because the MOR reverses its rotation when the direction of the applied magnetic field is reversed, the resultant rotation of the polarization plane which vibrates synchronously with the rotation of the cells shows the difference of the MOR induced by the solvent and solution. The errors of the determination of MORD induced by natural activity and phase change caused by the reflecting surfaces are also discussed.
