Penning Excitation Cross Sections for the Individual Zn (II) States by He 2^1S and He 2^3S Metastable Atoms

The relative Penning excitation rates for the individual Zn(II) states by He 2'S atomsand those by He 2'S atoms were measured separately using Penning electron spectros-copy. The absolute Penning excitation cross sections a.(M) and (11.(M) corresponding tothem were determined by using the known total Penning excitation cross section of Znatoms by He 2'S atoms and the Penning electron energy spectra for the He-Ar system.The values of a.(M) and a.(M) are as follows: in units of 10 "cm', a.(4s'S.,.)=3.5(1 -F-0.3); a.(4s 'S.,.)=2.2(1 -l-0.1); a.(4p 'P)=0.93(1 :4-0.35); a.(4p "P)0.24(1 -f-0.25); a.(4s" D,7.)=a.(4s' "D.,.)=0.56(1 f0.4); cr.(4s" D,.)=cr.(4s'"D.,.)=0.24(1 -F-0.25).
