Fine structures in Optical Absorption Spectra of MnO

Absorrtion sr>ectra of MnO sinxle cr>zstals are measured at various tempera-tures. Four broad absorption bands are observed in the visible and near-ultravioletregions. Fine structures in A, C and D bands are found at low temperatures forthe first time. Tentative assignments or these fine structures are made based on thecombinations of three kinds of elementar>z excitations (i.e. exciton, magnon andrhonon (f )). Obtained results are all in sood asreement with the measured values.The Racah parameters B and C, the crvstal-field strenxth DQ and the covalencYrarameter e are determined to be 560cm=', 3640cm-', l086cm-" and 0.02,respectively, from the fitting procedure of the observed band positions.
