Polyacetylene production in transformed root cultures of Campanula lactiflora

Transformed roots of Campanula lactiflora were induced by infection with Agrobacterium rhizogenes MAFF 03-01724. The roots grew well in hormone-free Murashige-Skoog, Gamborg B5 and Woody Plant liquid media in the dark and produced a large amount of a poly acetylene, lobetyolin. The highest growth (13.6 g fresh weight / flask) and lobetyolin content (0.22 % dry weight) were obtained in the 7 weeks culture in Woody Plant medium. The dry weight of the transformed roots cultured in hormone-free 1/2 Murashige-Skoog medium increased by the addition of sucrose (20-100 g /l), although the lobetyolin content was not affected by sucrose concentration.
