A cellulolytic anaerobe isolated from water-buffalo-manure compost in Thailand, using the roll-tube method, was classified as a Coprococcus species. The strain hydrolyzed crystalline cellulose (Avicel), rice straw, corncobs, and rice husks (4-5 g per liter of medium) within 20 h, in contrast to the negligible hydrolysis by Ruminococcus albus from cow rumen, indicating that the Coprococcus species is more active against lignocelluloses with high crystallinity than is R. albus. The main fermentation product from these lignocelluloses by the Coprococcus species was butyric acid, and minor products included acetic and propionic acids and ethanol.
