Enhancement of Cellulose Digestion by Mutants from an Anaerobe, Ruminococcus albus

To achieve effective decomposition of cellulose, some mutants were derived from Ruminococcus albus F-40 by ultraviolet and nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis. The mutants, designated as UV-h-13,NG-T-1302 and NG-N-1316,showed cellulolytic activity of as much as 2-10 times that of the parent strain. Moreover, the cellulose digestion rates of these mutants on jar-fermentor cultivation were also 2-2.5 times as high as that of the parent strain.
