Brillouin Scattering Study of the Anisotropic Relaxation of the Polarization Fluctuation in Ferroelectric TGS

The polarization relaxation phenomena in the uniaxial ferroelectric TGS havebeen studied by the observation<cf the angular dependence of the Brillouin scat-tering spectra. Both the frequency shift and the full width of the Brillouin satelliteshow remarkable anisotropic anomalies most strongly at 44.94'C below thetransition temperature 7'.=48.86'C. The experimental result is successfullyinterpreted from the viewpoint of the depolarization effect 011 the polarizationfluctuation. The effect is characterized by the anisc>tropic relttxation time withonly two parameters ; a relaxatiort time r. for a transverse polarization fluctuationand a generalized Lorentz factor L. The values r.=(0.93 .j.o.os>) x 10 " sec andL'::0.41 give a good description<cf the experimental result.
