Brillouin Scattering Study of the Ferroelastic Phase Transition of BiVO_4

The elastic instability in the ferroelastic phase transition of BiV0,j was inves-tigated by the observation of the Brillouin scattering spectra as a function oftemperature around the transition temperature. From the temperature dependenceof the observed spectra in two different scattering geometries it turns out clearthat the softening of elastic stifiness constant c.. -c.., not of c.., causes the fer-roelastic transition. The elastic softening is discussed in connection with thedomain structure.
