Low-Temperature Structure of K_2Ba (NO_2)_4

The crystal structure of the low-temperature phase (7-phase) of the dipolarfrustrated crystal K.Ba(NO.). was determined at l20'C by X-ray measurement ofsuperlattice reflections. A superlattice model proposed for the 7-phase has been re-fined. The space group is reasonably assigned as monoclinic C 2/m -C)., and theconfigurations of all the NO. groups are found to be ordered. The symmetry agreeswith the theoretical prediction made by Ishibashi et al., implying that the )'-phase isferroelastic.K.Ba(NO.)., structure analysis, phase transition, ferroelastic domain, NO. ions
