Soft Modes Associated with Incommensurate Phase Transitions in Biphenyl

The Raman scattering technique has been employed to observe the temperaturedependent modes associated with the incommensurate phase transitions inbiphenyl. A new soft mode, whose frequency becomes zero as 7'.=40.0K isapproached from below, has been found in the x.. spectra. A temperature-dependent mode in the x.., spectra, Which had previously been assigned to the"soft" mode could be observed even above T.. In addition, the anomalousincrease in Rayleigh wing was observed in the vicinity of T.. These features showthat the latter mode with x., should be interpreted in terms of a precursor-order-induced hard-mode.
