Successive phase transitions in {N(CH3)4}.CUCl4 single crystal were studiedby the measurements of the angle between two extinction positiorns, thermalexpansions, dielectric constants and ultrasound velocities, and also bzz the VVeis-senberg photographs. It has turned out that {N(CH.)4}.CUCl4 unclergoes thephase transitions successively from the prototypic phase (Pmcn), to the incom-mensurate phase, to the ferroelastic commensurate monoclinic phas?s (P12./cl)and then to another monoclinic phase (P112./n) at Tg=24'C, T.=18'C(on heating) and T.= -10'C, respectively. The phase transition sequence of{N(CH.)4}.CUC]., including the incommensurate-commensurate (f'erroelastic)transition, is discussed in terms of the Lar)dau-type free energy.
