The Uniaxial Stress Effect on Normal-Incommensurate Phase Transition in K_2SeO_4 : Observations of the Amplitude Mode by Raman Scattering

The incommensurate phase transition of K.Se0. was studied under variousuniaxial compressive stresses. The frequency and damping constant of the ampli-tude mode were measured by means of the Raman scattering as functions ofapplied stress X. at various temperatures. These results were analyzed by useof the Landau-type free-energy written in terms of the order parameter Q andstrain component u.. The stress dependence of the amplitude mode frequencyobeys well the relation P.=.=/11113(7') -X.]"", where 13(7') is the transitionstress at a temperature T. The normal-incommensurate phase transition pointT. decreases linearly with the increase of X. (dT./dX.= - 16 K/kbar).
