Phase Transition of KD_3(SeO_3)_2 Studied by Neutron Diffraction

Crystal structtu'e of low temperature phase of KD.(Se03). was studied byneutron diffraction method. Space group is Pbcn at the high temperature phaseand changes to P2./b below the transition point. At the low temperature phase,striking twin patterns due to spontaneous shear strain were observed. Suitablecorrections were applied to the observed data and the result of structure analysisrevealed that a hydrogen atom which is disordered at the high temperature phase isdistinctly bonded to one of the oxygens of Sea.. This induces slightly differentorientational changes and deformations of two Sea. tetrahedra connected bythe hydrogen. Discussion on the phase transition mechanism is given in parallelto that of KDP.
