A simple phenomenological theory is presented to discuss the origin of elastic"central t:teaks" observed near structural rhase transition temreratures t>y lightscattering. The scattering intensity I. of light from the polarization induced arounda charue imruritv is formulated on the analos>' of the Huanu scatterins of X-ra>?s.The dependence of I. on the direction of the scattering wave vector and tem-perature has been numerically computed and is found to reproduce well theexperurnental results 111 KD2PO4. The theory IS ShOWT1 t0 be applucable t0 the"central rteak" due to the strain induced around an elastic defect observed inKII2P04 Of KH3(1 -X)D3X(SC03)2'
