Raman Scattering Study on the Phase Transition of NH_4H_2PO_4 and ND_4D_2PO_4

Raman scattering spectra of NH.H.PO. and ND.D.P0. are studied in the paraelec-tric and antiferroelectric phases to determine the site symmetries of HzP0.- (D.P0j )and NHj (ND.' ) tons. The site symmetries of both ions are found to be C. in the an-tiferroelectric phase in accordance with the Nagamiya model. On the other hand, anyevidence of the local C. symmetry is not found in the spectra above the transitiontemperature and the site symmetries of these tons are determined to be C,. These ex-perimental results are discussed in relation to the validity of the Staler type model.
