On the Dielectric Anomaly of the Deuterated Dicalcium Strontium Propionate,Ca_2Sr (C_2D_5CO_2)_6

The deuterated dicalcium strontium propionate crystal (DDSP) was synthesized inorder to investigate the role of motion of propionate ions in the phase transition ofthe ferroelectric dicalcium strontium propionate (DSP). The temperature dependenceof the dielectric constant e, at 1 kHz shows an anomaly at 279.5 K (7'.) indicating anegligibly small isotope effect on T.. The temperature dependence is well described bythe Curie-Weiss law c, -e.=C(T -T.) ' with e.=3.7 and C=56.2Kabove T.. Theferroelectricity of DDSP was confirmed by the observation of the dielectric hysteresisloop below T.. The negligibly small isotope effect on T. suggests a secondary role ofthe motion of the propionate ions in the mechanism of the f<:rroelectric phase transi-tion of DSP.
