A Central Peak in the Light Scattering Spectra of the Ferroelectric TGS

A central peak has been observed in the Brillouin spectra of a trig[ycine sulfate(TGS) crystal. The observed scattering intensity shows a strong anisotropy; forthe case with a wave vector q parallel to the c axis (perpendicular to the polaraxis) it shows a temperature dependence which resembles closely that of thespecific heat C, in shape, while for the case of q parallel to the b axis (parallelto the polar axis) it is almost independent of temperature. These results areinterpreted in terms of the depolarization field effect which causes aha anisotropicfluctuations of the polarization. From the analysis of the temperature: dependencecurve observed in the case of q parallel to the c axis, it is concluded that the centralpeak is attributed to the thermal diffusion mode.
