Spontaneous Polarization of Deuterated Dicalcium Strontium Propionate,Ca_2Sr (C_2D_5CO_2)_6

The temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarization P.(T) of thedeuterated dicalcium strontium propionate (DDSP) has been observed in a tempera-ture range from room temperature to 240 K by the Sawyer-'fowar method under a 60Hz a.c. field. Near the ferroelectric transition point T '/, P.( T ) is well-described by therelation P.(7')?(7'3 -T)""'. The nondeuterated compound (DSP) also shows asimilar dependence on temperature P.(7')?(7'3 - T )"', w'here T'J is the transitiontemperature of DSP. The distinct effect of deuteration is found on the magnitude ofP.; the ratio of P. of DDSP to that of DSP is about 0.7 at every temperature in therange considered here. A structural isotope effect is suggested to take place in thedeuterated propionic molecules and/or in the network formed by metallic cations.
